Job Opportunities with the Office of the Attorney General

The Office of the New York State Attorney General is seeking a dedicated and motivated attorney to serve in the Civil Rights Bureau in the New York City office. The Bureau enforces laws protecting New Yorkers from discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, marital status, sexual orientation, military status, source of income, or disability. Using federal, state, and local laws, the Bureau investigates and prosecutes alleged patterns of unlawful discrimination in a variety of areas, including employment, housing, education, police services, immigrants’ rights, access to credit, and places of public accommodation. Some of the more recent matters handled by the Bureau seek to promote fair housing and equal employment opportunities, disability access, reproductive rights, language access, voting rights, and LGBT rights. The Bureau also works to combat predatory lending, immigration fraud, sexual harassment in the workplace, police misconduct, religious discrimination, foreclosure scams and discriminatory policies and practices, among other things. Through community outreach, public education and advocacy efforts, the Bureau works to achieve broad civil rights compliance. The Bureau’s docket reflects its commitment to combating discrimination and its effects, ensuring equality of opportunity, and promoting inclusion across New York State. Applicants must possess no less than five (5) to seven (7) years of experience in civil litigation (including clerkships, if any) and excellent writing and organizational skills. Fluency in a second language is a plus. Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York State and be admitted to practice law in New York State. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that attorneys in the Office be citizens of the United States.
